At age four she began singing and was soon able be noticed through her mother's request to take her to Sesame Street auditions. As a 6 year old, she began her acting career as a regular on the PBS children's show Sesame Street. She was later a part of in many productions in her home city, New York, including the Broadway show Fences, which featured James Earl Jones and, later, Billy Dee Williams. She also appeared in the off-Broadway musical Orfeo del Campo. When she was sevenyears old, she was a contestant on Star Search and won twice, receiving a four-star rating for her appearance another time.
